Critical Care Computerization: A Team Project

To meet certification requirements and continue to offer quality care to patients, the intensive care unit and operating room at the Arnault Tzanck Medical-Surgical Institute in Saint-Laurent du Var (06) are continuing their computerization efforts.
Last June, Diane ICU, a patient monitoring software for intensive care, was deployed in the department. We spoke with Dr. Laurie Tran, anaesthesiologist-intensivist at the Arnault Tzanck Medical-Surgical Institute.

The Key to Success: Team Involvement and Training

The initial project of the Institute was to equip the operating room. “But,” Dr. Laurie Tran explains, “with the certification process, we decided to computerize the intensive care unit first to meet the timeline requirements, and then, in a second phase, the operating room. We were familiar with the company Lensys, which was acquired by BOW MEDICAL, as we had already deployed Direct Consult a few years ago. This anaesthesia consultation software fully satisfied us. So it was quite natural for us to turn to them to continue our computerization.”

Before the deployment of Diane ICU, a close collaboration was established between the Institute’s IT department, the Bow Medical teams, and the users. “For 40 years, the department operated on paper. My motto was to make this transition to a new system smoothly, as switching to computerization can generate fears or reluctance. Therefore, we focused on communication, sharing, and cohesion.

The IT team mobilized to provide us with their technical expertise and to be proactive in purchasing digital products. Healthcare professionals invested in the use and customization of the software to ensure it was perfectly suited to the daily practice of the department, and the Bow Medical teams brought their expertise in the deployment and use of the software. A significant emphasis was also placed on staff training, which, in my opinion, strengthened acceptance and interest in Diane Icu.”

Diane Icu: An Innovative Software at the Heart of Intensive Care at the Arnault Tzanck Institute

The Maralpin establishment has 8 intensive care beds, and the intensive care unit was computerized on June 24, 2024.

Today, through a collaborative space and depending on the level of accreditation, the Institute’s professionals (anaesthesiologists-intensivists, paramedics, pharmacy, managers, etc.) have access to patient data via the software.

“We have integrated all patient vital signs and ventilator data, and soon, we will have data from extracorporeal renal purification machines as well as data from syringe pumps. These data uploads are automatic and increment our patient record within the hospital management system, Hospital Manager, from Softway Medical. This allows caregivers to access reliable, comprehensive, and qualitative data, enabling them to spend more time with patients.

User feedback has been very positive.” Diane ICU was chosen for its quality, ergonomics, and advanced features (personalized prescription assistance, dematerialization, automatic fluid balance management, the ability to create specific infection reports…) and for its future developments.

“In my view, computerization is a dynamic process. A software is not static. It must live, grow, and evolve, and we continue to improve it.”

Complete Traceability: Ensuring Continuity of Care Through Computerization

“Our ultimate goal is to be able to track the patient from their admission to the clinic until their discharge, without any data loss,” emphasizes Dr. Laurie Tran. This is why the Institute also plans to implement Diane Aims, software that will allow the management of patients in the operating room.

“Computerization is a team project, and this successful collaboration between the Institute’s IT department, the Bow Medical teams, and the users is very encouraging for future deployments!”
